The Summer Academy with the topic in 2021 „How will we live together?“ is organised every year in September by the TU Dortmund and the Università IUAV. This year, the Technical University of Eindoven, Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, Leibniz University of Hannover and Lübeck Technology University of Ap- plied Sciences took part.
Students, assistants and professors travel to Venice for a fortnight as part of the event. The aim is to experien- ce the city, the architecture and the culture of this place by means of a specific task. The conception of the pro- ject and the on-site supervision change annually bet- ween the chairs of the faculty. We are very pleased that the summer academy could be held by the History and Theory of Architecture Department in 2021 despite the Corona Pandemic.
The work on site was determined by investigations, sketches and measurements, findings and joint discus- sion of the approaches. Excursions, guided tours and lectures provided further knowledge on the task.
In preparation for the work in Venice, the basics of the individual palaces were worked out in a preliminary seminar in Dortmund.
The Venetian palazzo occupies a special place in archi- tectural history because it is not characterised by the need to defend itself. It is open and accessible from the outset. Despite all the differences between the successi- ve stylistic periods, Venetian palace architecture remai- ned true to certain basic principles of construction and typology with a central sala for centuries.
Over centuries basic principles of construction and typology of the venetian palace architecture remained the same, no matter how many different stylistic eras had passed.
To deal with the transformations of palaces that are no longer needed is a very exciting debate. The subject of the Summer Academy 2021 might be a worthful con- tribution to the general discourse of reuse and trans- formation in architecture.
